There are many different greenhouse gasses, and one of them is used in refrigerators. It is called HFC-134a and this gas is a type of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC). The gas was first discovered in the mid-1930s and it was used as an alternative to ozone depleting chlorofluorocarbons, or halons.
